Class 4 laser therapy on the lower back at Align Corrective Chiropractic, Durban North
Class 4 Laser Therapy in Durban North

For pain, disc injuries and neuropathy

Class 4 laser therapy uses focused light to help reduce pain and inflammation and support the body’s own repair. At Align Corrective Chiropractic we use the GBOX PLUS Class 4 laser for disc injuries, back and neck pain, and peripheral neuropathy. It is gentle and non-invasive, and a session takes 10 to 20 minutes. We use it on its own or alongside spinal decompression and chiropractic care.

IS THIS YOU?

  • Back or neck pain from a disc bulge, herniation or pinched nerve
  • Burning, tingling or numb feet or hands from peripheral neuropathy
  • Painful, swollen joints, hands or arms
  • Pain that hasn’t settled with rest or medication
  • You’ve been told adjustments or decompression aren’t suitable for you, for example because of osteoporosis or a past compression fracture

HOW IT WORKS

WHAT IS CLASS 4 LASER THERAPY?

Laser therapy, also called photobiomodulation, uses specific wavelengths of light that are absorbed by the cells in the treated area. The aim is to help reduce pain and inflammation, improve local blood flow and support tissue repair.

“Class 4” refers to the laser’s power. A Class 4 laser delivers more energy than a low-level (Class 3) laser, so it can reach deeper tissues such as the muscles and joints around the spine, in a shorter session.

HOW WE USE CLASS 4 LASER THERAPY

  • Disc injuries and pinched nerves: alongside spinal decompression, to help ease pain and inflammation around the irritated nerve.
  • Peripheral neuropathy: to help manage burning, tingling and numbness, often combined with red light therapy. We score your nerve function before starting and re-test as you go.
  • Swelling and joint pain: for hands, arms, knees and other joints.
  • When other treatments aren’t suitable: for example for older patients, or people with osteoporosis or a past compression fracture, where adjustments or decompression aren’t appropriate.

WHAT TO EXPECT

WE LISTEN

We start with your story: where it hurts, how long it has been going on, and what you have already tried.
Assess - Durban Chiro X rays

WE ASSESS

A thorough exam, with on-site digital X-rays where needed. For neuropathy, we score your nerve function and take thermal photos of your feet, so we can re-test and compare as you go.

WE TREAT

If laser therapy suits you, each session takes 10 to 20 minutes. We usually start with 6 sessions, then re-assess, using the laser on its own or alongside decompression and chiropractic care.

RED LIGHT THERAPY

We also use a red light therapy panel, which covers the foot and lower leg at a lower intensity. We often combine it with the laser for neuropathy in the feet.

Our GBOX PLUS laser has four wavelengths (635, 810, 980 and 1064nm), so we can adjust the treatment to the depth of the tissue: from the skin’s surface down to muscles, joints and bone. Read more in Class 4 laser wavelengths explained.

WHY ALIGN CORRECTIVE CHIROPRACTIC?

Laser therapy works best as part of a clear plan, based on a proper assessment and measured as you go.

  • Assessment first. A thorough exam, and on-site digital X-rays where needed, before we recommend anything.
  • Measured progress. For neuropathy, we score your nerve function and take thermal photos at the start, then re-test as you go.
  • Laser, red light, decompression and chiropractic care in one place, so your care can be combined to suit you.
  • 20 years of experience in chiropractic care.

FREQUENTLY ASKED QUESTIONS

Does laser therapy hurt?
No. Most people feel a gentle warmth and find it relaxing.
How long is a session?
Between 10 and 20 minutes, depending on the area being treated.
How many sessions will I need?
We usually start with 6 sessions and then re-assess. Long-standing conditions, such as neuropathy, often need more. Fees are charged per visit.
Are there any side effects?
Side effects are uncommon. Some people notice mild warmth or redness in the treated area that settles quickly. We check your health history first to make sure it suits you.
Who is laser therapy not suitable for?
We don’t use it over the eyes, over a pregnant abdomen, over known cancer or tumours, or on people taking medication that makes the skin sensitive to light. We check this with you before starting.
What’s the difference between laser and red light therapy?
The laser delivers more focused energy to a specific area and reaches deeper tissues. Red light covers a larger area at a lower intensity. We sometimes use both together.
Can older patients have laser therapy?
Yes. Because it’s gentle and doesn’t involve any manipulation, it is often a good option for older patients, or for people who can’t have adjustments or decompression.
Can it be combined with decompression?
Yes. For disc injuries and pinched nerves we often use the laser in the same visit as spinal decompression.
Does medical aid cover it?

Yes, if your plan covers chiropractic care. Laser therapy is billed as part of your chiropractic treatment, so it’s usually paid from your medical aid savings. Check your plan for details, or ask our reception team to help.
