NECK PAIN

Imagine balancing a bowling ball on the tip of your fingers all day long. This is just one of the things that your neck has to do. The slightest deviation in the normal position of the bones of the neck can cause pain and symptoms to develop. The neck is very susceptible to injury because of the degree of flexibility in the neck, and the fact that it has the least amount of muscular stabilisation.

The nerves that originate in the lower neck run down the arms and the upper back. This means that damage/injury to your neck may result in pain and symptoms in the upper back and arms. In fact tingling, numbness, “pins and needles” and pain in the arms are often a sign of a neck problem. These symptoms can often be confused with carpal tunnel syndrome. The Chiropractors at Align Corrective Chiropractic Durban are trained in detecting and correcting these common neck problems.

What is the cause of neck pain?

The main causes of neck pain are physical, emotional or chemical stress. We often see patients with neck problems as a result of a previous injury and poor posture. Another common cause is emotional stress. Stress triggers the tightening of our neck muscles without us even being aware of it. In time this can lead to chronic muscle spasm and pain. Muscle relaxants and painkillers are often given to dull the pain, but these rarely address the underlying cause.

“Spending too much time during the working day hunched in front of the computer resulted in neck and back pain. David was able to put together a treatment programme that helped to ease the pain as well as encourage correct posture. I am now sitting more comfortably and not bothered by a sore neck at the end of the day.”
